Low-mileage AP2s are up ~9% year-on-year and the very best now clear $60k, but roughly one car in five that comes to BaT is hiding a repainted panel — and the missing VIN stickers tell you which.

The market

Across all 589 completed BaT AP2 auctions the median sold price is $33,250 with a 25th–75th band of $27,500–$39,500 and an 89.3% sell-through rate. That is a broad, liquid market with genuine two-way risk: the full range runs $11,555 to $101,000. The trend is clearly up but no longer vertical. Annual medians went $20,250 (2018) → $33,500 (2021) → $36,000 (2022), then flatlined at $33,850–$35,000 for 2023–2025 before stepping up to $38,875 in 2026 (n=66). Trailing-12-month median is $38,000 against $34,750 the year before, +9.4%. Sell-through of 89.3% means reserves are mostly realistic; the 63 no-sales cluster around sellers who wanted collector money for a driver-grade car.

Mileage is the master variable and the curve is steep at both ends. Sub-1,000-mile time capsules trade at $63,500–$70,000 (483-Mile, Original-Owner 2004 Honda S2000 at $63,500; 835-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 at $70,000). The 10k–13k band is $58,500–$63,000. From roughly 17k to 30k miles the market compresses hard into $31,000–$45,500 — a 23k-mile car and a 40k-mile car sold within $1,250 of each other in the same week (23k-Mile 2005 Honda S2000 at $38,000 versus 40k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 at $36,750), which prompted commenter Marc08EX to ask outright why the price was so similar. Past 85k miles the market caves to $18,250–$32,250, and a 149k-mile car brought $17,000 (No Reserve: 2006 Honda S2000).

What separates a $32k car from a $42k car at the same mileage is not condition in the abstract — it is documentation of originality. The community has converged on a checklist: ten matching body-panel VIN stickers, paint-meter readings, a cold-start video, service records. When those are present the car outruns comps (One-Family-Owned 2006 Honda S2000 at $40,350 on 24k miles, with BayViewSpeedShop noting it "came out of the gate with all the things mandatory for a successful S2000 sale here"). When they are absent, bidders discount aggressively or walk: 23k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 with a missing rear-bumper VIN still made $43,501 on colour and condition, but 43k-Mile 2006 Honda S2000 failed at $27,000 largely over an unexplained missing front-bumper sticker and an undisclosed soft-top tear.

Two structural quirks matter for timing. • Press the driver's outer seat bolster and compare its condition to the claimed mileage. Collapsed foam on a sub-20k-mile car means investigate the odometer, not just negotiate.
• Confirm whether the timing chain tensioner has been replaced and with what part; a Billman Motion unit is a genuine plus, an original tensioner past 80k miles is a scheduled expense.
• Ask for the fluid-service dates by date, not mileage — brake, clutch, coolant, transmission and differential fluids age out on garage-queen cars that show 'no service needed' by mileage.
• Verify the hardtop is a genuine Honda unit, not a Ballade/Forbidden/Seibon replica; the $5-8k premium only attaches to OEM.
• Check whether all original parts are included with any modified car (OEM wheels, suspension, exhaust, steering wheel with airbag, ECU tune) — reversibility is what protects value.
• For supercharged cars, get the dyno sheet, the tune history and the installer's name; confirm emissions status for your state.

Ask the seller

1. Can you post close-up photos of all ten body-panel VIN stickers in situ, and paint-meter readings for each panel?
2. Has a compression or leak-down test been done? If not, will you allow one before the auction closes?
3. Has the timing chain tensioner ever been replaced, and by whom with what part?
4. What are the DOT date codes on all four tires and the spare?
5. By date rather than mileage: when were the coolant, brake, clutch, transmission and differential fluids last changed, and do you have the invoices?
6. Where has the car physically lived, year by year — and can you post undercarriage photos of the rocker pinch welds, jacking points and rear shock towers?
7. Does the soft top have any tears at the rear corners, do the retraction straps still tension properly, and does the frame sit flat when stowed?
8. On a cold start, does the starter ever grind or does the chain rattle? Can you send an unedited cold-start video taken first thing in the morning?
9. Is the hardtop the factory Honda item with the correct hardware, and is the stand included?
10. How many miles have you personally added, and has the car been exercised to redline regularly or just idled to temperature?
11. Are all removed factory parts included — wheels, suspension, exhaust, airbag steering wheel, stock ECU file?
12. Carfax shows a clean history: has any bodywork been paid for out of pocket, insurance-free? (This is exactly how the 23k-Mile 2005 Honda S2000 Chevy Blazer impact stayed off the record.)
13. Has the car ever been over-revved or mis-shifted to your knowledge, and has the valve clearance ever been checked?

Walk away when

• A clean Carfax paired with missing VIN stickers. This combination appeared repeatedly and is the strongest single signal of unreported accident repair — most starkly on One-Owner, 8k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000, where GarrettM identified an 'R DOT' replacement hood and absent fender and bumper tags on a supposedly untouched 8,000-mile one-owner car that still made $41,500.
• Damage or paintwork disclosed only after a commenter finds it in a photo. On No Reserve: 19k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 the replaced driver's fender and repainted bumper surfaced only under questioning, and trper91 then documented visible fender-to-door misalignment across photos 23, 24 and 26.

• Quick dealer flips and relists. Check whether the car has run before and at what number.

Recent examples: No Reserve: One-Owner 2005 Honda S2000 at $25,750 (90k, one owner, climate-controlled), 2006 Honda S2000 at $24,500 (64k, penalised for an unresponsive seller), No Reserve: Original-Owner 2006 Honda S2000 at $26,250 (95k, records). BillTracy's rule of thumb on No Reserve: Single-Family-Owned 2007 Honda S2000 was that you buy in around $25k and spend $5k reconditioning to land at 'around $30k for an excellent car that will be good for another 100k miles.'

Best-in-class — $55,000-$70,000. Sub-15,000 miles in Laguna Blue Pearl, Chicane Silver or a rare interior combination, with full paperwork: 21k-Mile 2007 Honda S2000 $60,000, One-Owner, 24k-Mile 2006 Honda S2000 $60,600, 13k-Mile 2006 Honda S2000 $61,000, 10k-Mile 2009 Honda S2000 $63,000, 835-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 $70,000. Above $60,000 you are buying a museum piece and inheriting a commissioning bill — tires, every fluid, pedal stops, and the risk that valve springs and seals have been sitting for two decades.

Supercharged: pay stock money at best. Well-documented LHT or ScienceofSpeed builds have landed $42,790-$46,000, roughly in line with equivalent-mileage stock cars, and an unsorted or emissions-illegal one goes to $27,000-$33,000.

Outliers

835-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 $70,000

Highest result in the recent 100. A genuine 21-year barn-find time capsule in Suzuka Blue over blue leather, one owner, parked in a storage facility from 2005. It needed a fuel pump, battery, coolant service and filters just to run — s219 remarked the undercarriage and invoice suggested it had been 'lost and locked away in a barn or cave.' Pure preservation money; there is no driving value in it.

483-Mile, Original-Owner 2004 Honda S2000 $63,500

Sold post-auction at $63,500 after failing at $61,000, despite s219 — who claims to have appraised over a hundred S2000s — calling it 'by far the nicest condition car I've seen' and 'noticeably better than the 835-mile car.' Demonstrates that at this altitude the market is thin and reserve placement matters more than condition.

13k-Mile 2006 Honda S2000 $61,000

Roughly $22k above the all-time median on the strength of Laguna Blue Pearl (1/848 for 2006 USDM) plus 13k miles — and it had front-bumper damage under the clear bra requiring paint. Commenter zeyangster called the $60k number in advance purely from the previous LBP comp. This is the colour premium in its purest form.

2008 Honda S2000 $47,500

68,000 miles, six owners, an aftermarket windshield, a reupholstered driver's bolster with mismatched donor leather, brake fluid untouched since 2019 and no TCT service — yet $47,500, roughly $13k above the mileage curve. Bought on spec: 177 Grand Prix White cars for 2008 and the V3 red-and-black interior. lp2007: 'people went a bit crazy on this one lol.'

No Reserve: 32k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000 $35,000

The clearest evidence that single results are noise. This exact car sold at $28,000 in October 2025 as No Reserve: 32k-Mile 2004 Honda S2000, the buyer defaulted, and it made $35,000 six weeks later with no changes. zakiu: 'this was top dollar for a berlina. very much an outlier. both bidders here could have bought it for 28k back then as well.'

No Reserve: 2007 Honda S2000 $23,456

Laguna Blue Pearl — normally a $42k median colour — for $23,456. Two 2018 Carfax damage entries, a March 2025 repossession note, a missing front-right fender VIN tag, unverifiable engine and transmission originality, and a seller who could not answer basic questions. UBMotorCo: 'Seller is all over the place with info on the car, yes it's LBP but definitely does not instill confidence.' Colour does not rescue a broken history.

2007 Honda S2000 $17,400

The floor for a running, unmodified AP2. Carfax odometer-rollback flag with service records showing ~42k in 2015 against a 6k replacement cluster, a 2015 vandalism/parts-theft event, and paint and metal oxidation throughout from living five miles from the Boca Raton beach. Reserve not met at $16,750; closed off-auction at $17,400 with no test drives offered.

One-Owner 2005 Honda S2000 $43,250

A no-sale that should have been a $55k+ car: 3,600 miles, one owner, clean Carfax, factory original. It failed because the seller never answered a single question across 48 comments, including direct asks about whether the oil had ever been changed. Rodeo's verdict: 'Seller's absence hurt this one. This is an interactive platform, failure to communicate is a big problem.'

2008 Honda S2000 Track Car $15,500

Absolute low of the recent set at $15,500 on 178,000 miles — with a Chewerks-rebuilt head, Feal coilovers, StopTech brakes and a documented 1:31.7 at Willow Springs. Two Carfax damage entries, a colour change from New Formula Red to Apex Blue with the VIN stickers painted over, expired 2024 Sparco seat and harness, and not California smog legal. japans2k: 'such a good price for this track s2000.'

Verdict

The AP2 is now a properly researched collector market with an unusually literate bidder base, and that base has settled on a single question: is this car original and documented? If you want a car to drive, the value is emphatically in the $28,000-$38,000 band — a 30k-60k-mile stock example with ten VIN tags, real records, a fresh TCT and a sorted top. Buy that car, add tires and a full time-based fluid service, and you own something that samwise correctly described as 'low enough miles to not lose a lot of value even if driven but high enough that you can enjoy it guilt free.' If you want the investment-grade car, you must pay $55,000-$70,000 for sub-15k miles in Laguna Blue Pearl, Rio Yellow or Grand Prix White, and accept that you are buying paperwork and paint depth as much as a car. What I would not do is pay $40,000+ for a low-mileage example with missing VIN stickers, a silent seller, or no compression test — the evidence here shows the market pays a genuine premium for verified originality and punishes ambiguity by $5,000-$8,000 or simply refuses to clear the reserve.

Several caveats. The colour medians are computed on a small analysed subset and are confounded with mileage — Grand Prix White (n=5) and Chicane Silver Metallic (n=5) are too thin to support any premium claim on their own, and both samples happen to contain unusually low-mileage or specially-specified cars. Laguna Blue Pearl (n=10) and Silverstone Metallic (n=30) are the only colour figures I would lean on. The transmission line is meaningless: every AP2 is a six-speed manual, so the $37,876 'manual' median is just the analysed subset's median, not a premium. Note also a direct contradiction in the record: statistics put Berlina Black at $38,750 (n=13), while commenter VTys2k asserted on 14k-Mile 2007 Honda S2000 that 'For AP2's Berlina Black has the second lowest hammer prices of all colors' — I cannot reconcile the two and would treat both as weak. The 2026 median of $38,875 rests on 66 sales and includes the recent cluster of exceptional time capsules, so some of the apparent +9.4% is mix shift toward low-mileage cars rather than pure appreciation. The $101,000 top-of-range sale from 2023 does not appear in the deep-analysed set and is almost certainly a Club Racer or similar special, not a standard AP2. Finally, essentially all failure-rate figures here come from what commenters chose to raise in 100 threads — that reflects what is visible in photographs and what this community obsesses over, not verified incidence. Comment-thread claims about VIN tags, soft-top defects and TCT failures recur often enough, and are corroborated by specialists like s219 and by sellers' own disclosures, that I weight them highly; one-off assertions (the 'this one was stolen' remark on 23k-Mile 2005 Honda S2000, or unexplained rust claims) are unverified noise.
