996 911 Turbo

https://bringatrailer.com/porsche/996-turbo/ · 911 completed auctions · 40 read in depth · compiled Jul 30, 2026

The 996 Turbo has stopped being the cheap 911 Turbo: manual coupes now median $85,250 and the 12-month median is up 26.5% to $75,250, while Tiptronics, cabs and accident cars still trade at half the money.

32k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed

Current bid $34,911 · ends in 1d 19h (Aug 1, 2026) · appraised Jul 30, 2026

Estimated hammer
$77,500
$66,000 – $88,000
55% below estimate medium — the mileage band and colour combo are well-mapped by recent comps, but the undocumented 2001 accident entry, absent DME report, thin records and volume-dealer consignment create a wide dispersion band (recent 30-39k cars have landed anywhere from $77.6k to $94.5k)

A 32k-mile Arctic Silver/Graphite Grey 996 Turbo manual coupe with the right spec but a dealer's thin paper trail, a 2001 Carfax damage entry and untouched coolant lines — it should hammer in the high $70s, well above the current $34,911.

Bidding: The current $34,911 is far below where this finishes — expect roughly double it by Saturday. Fair value on the information now available is about $75,000-$80,000; that is where I would be prepared to buy, contingent on a PPI arranged before the hammer since the dealer explicitly disclaims inspection contingencies. If the DME comes back clean, paint meter readings are uniform, and the seller answers Henmag's list credibly, $85,000 is defensible for a genuine 32k-mile manual Arctic Silver coupe. Without a DME report and with the 2001 accident undocumented, stop at $80,000 — the $77,575 and $79,500 comps show what the market pays for a low-mileage car whose story cannot be verified. Budget $4-6k on top for coolant lines and tires. Expect the reserve to be met, but only just; if the dealer has anchored on the $88-94k comps rather than the documentation-light ones, this ends RNM in the mid-$70s like the 37k-mile car did on 26 July.

32k miles with manual transaxle, coupe body baseline ~$88k · Undocumented November 2001 'minor damage' Carfax entry -8% · No DME over-rev report offered; nine-part question list unanswered -$5,000 · Coolant lines not pinned or welded, no records -$4,000 · Thin service file — plugs/O2 and clutch in 2018, little else -$4,000

Modified 15k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed

Current bid $25,000 · ends in 6d 20h (Aug 6, 2026) · appraised Jul 30, 2026

Estimated hammer
$103,000
$86,000 – $122,000
76% below estimate medium-low — the 15k-mile X50 manual chassis is worth $130k+ stock, but nothing about this car's build is verified (no dyno, no stock parts, no cats, replaced DME) and modified 996TTs have a wide, thin, mood-driven result band

A genuinely rare 15k-mile 2003 X50 manual coupe that has been converted into an unverified ~800hp catless street build with no stock parts — it should clear the modified-car band but stop well short of the $127k a preserved 30k-mile X50 just brought, landing near $100–110k.

Bidding: The current $25,000 shown in the essentials (with a $45,000 bid already posted in the thread) is far below where this finishes — expect the number to roughly double or better in the final minutes. As a buyer, this is worth real money for the 15k-mile 2003 X50 chassis and the OEM GT2 aero, but you are buying somebody else's build with no exit to stock, no cats and no dyno. Bid confidently to $95,000. Go to $105,000 only if the seller documents the turbo build and the coolant pipes and lets a specialist inspect it. Treat $115,000 as your hard stop and walk away entirely above that without a compression/leak-down result — at $120k+ you are paying preserved-X50 money for a modified driver, and the resale audience is the same small tuned-996TT pool that produced $79,500 and $83,000 results this year. Expect it to hammer near $100–108k; if the dealer's reserve sits above $115k, a reserve-not-met is a realistic outcome, and in that case a post-auction negotiation in the high $90s is the better play.

The market

Across all 911 completed BaT auctions the median sold price is $61,251 (mean $65,757, quartiles $48,625–$73,528), but that median is a decade-long artefact. The year-by-year series shows the step change: $45,375 in 2018, $47,000 in 2020, then $64,000–$69,250 through 2021–2023, a soft patch at $63,500 (2024) and $60,500 (2025), and $83,000 so far in 2026 on 53 sales. Rolling 12 months: $75,250 versus $59,500 the year prior, +26.5%. The 2024–2025 dip and the 2026 spike are largely mix — the recent listings skew heavily toward low-mileage manual coupes, X50 cars and Turbo S variants, which is exactly where the money has gone.

The spread is brutal and it is not primarily about mileage. In the deep-analysed set, manual cars median $85,250 (n=32) against $51,500 for the three Tiptronics — and the Tiptronic examples were not junk: 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe with a Markski ~600hp build, PCCB and a year of sorting brought $61,500, while commenter TheDaVinci wrote 'man tiptronic really hurts the value on these cars huh? i feel like a 6 speed would've gone for at least double.' At the top, 14,000-mile Augie Pabst Jr.'s 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed made $175,000 and Viola Metallic 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed made $168,000; the all-time range runs to $441,000 (2024) and $409,996 (2026) for essentially delivery-mileage cars. At the bottom, No Reserve: Modified 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe — Tiptronic, TMU title, TechArt kit — took $42,250.

Mileage matters but only inside spec. The regression across 35 recent cars is loose: 23k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed brought $111,000 while 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed at 81,000 miles brought $91,996, and 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed at 93,000 miles brought $84,500. Roughly: sub-25k manual coupes clear $100k–$141k; 30k–50k cars sit $71,500–$101,000; 75k–100k unmolested manuals still make $76,300–$91,996. Documented Carfax accidents and non-reversible cosmetic work are the reliable discount — commenter denverjaff on 31k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed ($79,500 despite 31k miles, single owner and X50): 'Seems like the accident held this one down by $20k+.'

Sell-through is 80.2% (180 of 911 no-sales), and the recent reserve failures are instructive: 37k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed stalled at $73,000 with self-performed service and no driving video; 10k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed stalled at $105,000 when BaT's essentials wrongly said 'engine replacement records,' then made $126,000 nineteen days later once the numbers-matching engine was documented — a $21,000 swing on paperwork alone. 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed stalled at $70,000 with 'towed to shop' and 'won't start' entries buried in its records. In this market bidders pay for evidence, not adjectives.

majorCoolant pipe adhesive-joint failure (pipes must be pinned or welded)

raised on roughly 14 of the 40 cars reviewed — the single most repeated question in these threads

techweenie on 46k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: 'The closest thing these models have to an achilles heel is the adhesive failures in coolant line connections. They must be pinned or welded at some point in the car's life.' The seller of No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed Track Car — a caged, tuned track car — answered 'To my knowledge the coolant lines have not been pinned or Welded.' The seller of 37k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed gave the evasive 'it would be safe to assume they haven't been,' and that car went reserve-not-met. On No Reserve: 38k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed, vonmec asked whether pinning was done during the 2021 engine-out service; the seller confirmed it was not — the engine was out and the pipes were left alone. Counterpoint from bmdaia and kmarku across several threads: many 100k-mile cars run original pipes without incident and pinning matters mainly under track/sustained-high-speed use.

Check: Ask directly whether the pipes were pinned or welded, and demand the invoice naming the shop and the method. If the answer is 'not to my knowledge,' budget for an engine-out job ($4-8k of labour bundled with water pump, thermostat, seals) and bid accordingly. On any tracked or tuned car treat unpinned pipes as a hard defect.

moderateSecond-gear pop-out on 2001–2002 G96/50 gearboxes (brass synchros)

raised on at least 5 of the 40, always on 2001–2002 cars

thefleshrocket on 10k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: 'first year model with the transmission that's notorious for second-gear pop-out issues.' Carguybat on 24k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: "Many '01 6MT's pop out of second gear. It's a relatively simple fix but there is a lot of time involved to get to, and then tear down, the transmission." On the failed 10k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed listing, bmdaia described it as endemic to 2001-2002 hand-assembly with roughly '50-50 probability,' fixed with shims from MY2003. Note 38k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed carried a 2004 warranty-replacement gearbox with hardened synchros and made $94,500 — above most 2001s of similar miles. On 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (89k miles, $62,500) rob_dysart asked 'Does it pop out of 2nd gear?' and the seller never answered.

Check: On the test drive, hard 3-2 and 2-1 downshifts and a full-throttle 1-2 upshift with light hand pressure off the lever. Ask whether the gearbox has ever been out, and check for a factory replacement G96/50 (post-2003 forged-steel synchros) — that is a value-add, not a warning.

raised or disclosed on at least 8 of the 40 cars

bmdaia's blunt summary on 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe: 'Every 996/997/CGT hydraulic spoiler will fail 100%.' The seller of 47k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed disclosed the hydraulics 'started to leak on one side in 2024' and spent $6,600+ on a Rennkit eRam conversion. Original-Owner, 31k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed disclosed 'April 2025 service record noted a leak from the tail hydraulics' at only 31k miles. On No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed the seller admitted 'The rear spoiler mechanism does not work,' and on 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe the spoiler had been disabled via micro-switch deletion — only revealed under direct questioning.

Check: Cycle the wing on video, up and down, from cold. Look for hydraulic weep at the rams and at the deck-lid seals. Ask whether the original rams are included if a Rennkit eRam electric kit has been fitted — the OEM parts are worth keeping.

moderateClutch hydraulic circuit — accumulator, slave cylinder, master cylinder

raised or serviced on at least 6 of the 40 manual cars

Carguybat on 24k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: '996tt manual clutch hydraulic system design is terrible. Issues with hydraulic pumps, clutch slaves, clutch master cylinders and accumulators are common.' 18k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed had its accumulator replaced in 2019 at very low mileage. 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (77k miles, $81,500) needed a clutch slave cylinder in the March 2026 engine-out service. On the failed 10k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed listing, Dandan401 questioned a clutch replacement at 5k miles and traderco noted 'similar clutch vacuum assist stiffening issues on low-mileage 996 examples.'

Check: Pedal feel from cold and hot; any stiffening, long travel or a pedal that fails to return. Ask whether the accumulator and slave have been replaced and when. Note that a low-mileage car with a 'preventative' clutch replacement often means a hydraulic problem was chased first.

Leica356 on 30k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed: 'The interior has a typical case of that 996 cat scratch fever which is hidden somewhat with the lighting they used.' OakMan on 44k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: 'These carbon parts had a tendency to yellow and delam from the oem plastic underlay parts... Check: Photograph the driver's door threshold, dash top in front of the dials, centre console and steering-wheel airbag cover in daylight. OEM carbon parts are discontinued; budget for a specialist re-wrap rather than replacement. Verify carbon pieces are factory, not later aftermarket panels.

minorTaillight and third-brake-light stress cracks

disclosed on at least 5 of the 40

Carguybat on 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (77k, $81,500): 'Almost every 996tt I have bought with very few exceptions has those cracks in the same spot.' The previous owner of 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed disclosed 'Stress cracks on the taillights,' RWD-Converted 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed showed 'cracked taillight lenses,' and Original-Owner, 31k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed disclosed a cracked third brake light seal.

Check: Inspect lens corners around the mounting points and the seal under the third brake light. Cheap to live with, but a seller who missed it missed other things too.

major where it appliesTuned engines run at high boost on thin oil — rod-bending and modification-induced damage

raised on 3 of the 40, but with specific severity

Lesr3204 on 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed (530whp/585wtq): 'if they have been tuned and you constantly run 1.2 bar or boost or higher and you stick with the OW40 oil... you run the chances of bending rods. The solution, run a good higher viscosity oil.' On No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed, bmdaia read the 2013 $17k engine-out rebuild as damage remediation: 'the motor was rebuilt due to damaging harmonics on the IMS thrustplates. And that was quite obviously due to extensive ECU/Turbo remapping.' On the same car the seller could not say whether the coolant pipes had ever been done. Modified, 31k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed carried a 640hp Stage 1 tune, a Carfax 'engine replaced' notation from 2002 and an 18-year documentation gap — it still made $83,000, but the buyer bought a story, not a record.

Check: On any tuned car establish the map, the boost target, the wastegate/actuator hardware and the oil grade used. Ask whether a stock flash is available in the car — several tuned examples could not be returned to stock without hardware changes. Compression and leak-down before purchase.

scattered across the set; tyres over 8 years old on at least 3 cars

18k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed was on 10-year-old Bridgestones; Original-Owner, 31k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed still wore 2010 date-code tyres. 44k-Mile 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed sheds 'small specs of foam' from the vents — decomposing evaporator foam never addressed. 47k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed needed the steering-lock assembly replaced, which the seller called 'a common 996 problem.' 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe fitted CSF and Markski all-aluminium units 'to address plastic end-cap failure.' On 30k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed the front diff whine had been present since purchase; bmdaia: '996 diffs will whine just the nature of this beast... Nothingburger IMO.'

Check: Read tyre date codes before you bid. Blast the HVAC and look for foam confetti. Turn the key and listen for a slow-clicking ignition lock. Check radiator/intercooler end caps for weeping. Listen for front differential whine at 30-50mph steady throttle.

moderate as a due-diligence gap, minor as a mechanical riskDME over-rev reports: frequently unavailable, frequently misread

requested on more than a dozen of the 40; refused, unobtainable or contested on at least 8

Carguybat on Modified, 31k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed: 'if it occurred 50-100 hours ago and I don't hear any strange knocks and compression checks out it is most likely OK to purchase.' On No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed Track Car, UltimateZo found a Range 2 mechanical overrev '2.0 operating hours prior to this readout.' On 36k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed, Carguybat computed the overspeed at 'approximately .30 seconds above 7,250 rpms' and dismissed it. On 30k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed the seller failed with four different tools before finally getting a PIWIS report late; on 39k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed and Modified 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed no usable report was ever produced — wirobins called the latter 'disappointingly useless.'

Check: Get a PIWIS or Durametric pull, and read it the way the specialists do: how many operating hours since the last Range 2 event, not the raw count. A Range 2 hit two hours before the readout is a walk-away; one 50-100 hours ago with clean compression is noise.

raised on 2 of the 40

thefleshrocket on RWD-Converted 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed quoted the earlier auction: 'the seller reports that the car will smoke on startup if the turbos are not allowed to cool.' The seller replied the turbos were inspected during the 2021 engine-out and 'do not smoke now' — unverified. On 33k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed, Riv19 flagged startup smoke in the photos and 01996tt reported the same symptom on his own car, resolved by replacing a turbo check valve. On Original-Owner, 31k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed the seller initially claimed a cold start then corrected to warm after commenter dez pushed.

Check: Insist on a genuine cold-start video — filmed with the bonnet up if possible — not a warm restart. On RWD-Converted 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed the smoke history only surfaced because a commenter dug up the 2020 listing text.

Pre-purchase checklist

Ask the seller

  1. Have the coolant pipes been pinned or welded, by whom, at what mileage, and can you send the invoice? (Anything short of a document is a no.)
  2. Can you produce a PIWIS or Durametric DME printout showing Range 1/Range 2 counts and the operating hours at the last Range 2 event?
  3. Has the gearbox ever been out or replaced? If this is a 2001 or 2002, does 2nd gear hold under a full-throttle upshift and a hard 3-2 downshift?
  4. Is the engine numbers-matching, and will you photograph the engine number alongside the factory identification sheet or a VIN Analytics report?
  5. When were the clutch, accumulator and slave cylinder last replaced, and is the pedal identical hot and cold?
  6. Does the rear wing raise and lower reliably from cold, and are the original hydraulic rams present if an eRam kit is fitted?
  7. What are the tyre date codes, and what are the PCCB rotor thicknesses if fitted? (44k-Mile 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed published front 34.8mm against a 33.7mm minimum — that is the standard to ask for.)
  8. For any Carfax accident or 'minor damage' entry: what panels, what shop, and where is the final repair invoice? Sellers on 31k-Mile 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed and 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe could produce neither.
  9. If it is tuned: which map, what peak boost, what oil grade has been run at that boost, and is a stock flash loaded and usable without hardware changes?
  10. Are the original wheels, exhaust, suspension, seats and head unit included? Several cars in this set had lost every original part, which costs real money to reverse.
  11. Will you confirm readiness monitors are complete and the car will pass emissions in my state?
  12. Who has physically driven this car in the last 60 days, and can I have a cold-start plus a 10-minute driving video with the instrument cluster in frame?

Budget

Driver grade, $45,000–$65,000: Tiptronic coupes, cars with real accident history, TMU titles, or heavily modified examples. 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe (Tiptronic, 74k) at $51,500 and No Reserve: Modified 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe at $42,250 mark the bottom. Assume a $10-15k catch-up on coolant pipes, clutch hydraulics, wing hydraulics and tyres.

Solid manual coupe, 40k–100k miles, clean Carfax, some documentation: $68,000–$95,000. Examples: 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (78k) $68,000; 46k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed $71,500; 39k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed $77,575; 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (77k, unmolested, engine-out done) $81,500; 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (81k) $91,996. Augie Pabst Jr.'s 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed

Augie Pabst Jr.'s 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed $175,000

Everything stacked: 14,000 miles, one owner, factory X50 ($17,700 option), Arctic Silver over Metropol Blue, racing-driver provenance and a 40-year family friend publicly vouching it never saw winter. Roughly 2.1x the 2026 median of $83,000, and streetroddoc still called it 'a steal' against a 1,600-mile car at $182k.

Viola Metallic 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed

Viola Metallic 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed $168,000

Believed 1-of-1 paint-to-sample on the 996 Turbo S per marque data-keeper c041v, 21k miles, PCCB, final-year manual Turbo S Cabriolet. It made $74,000 more than 44k-Mile 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed and $98,000 more than the black 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed that failed at $70,000 — the colour was the difference.

One-Owner, 17k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed

One-Owner, 17k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed $141,000

Polar Silver over Boxster Red with full carbon interior — c041v counted six cars in that combination — plus the original owner's son publicly confirming the 17k miles were weekend breakfast runs. Bought by a dealer, which tells you the trade thought there was still room at $141k.

No Reserve: Modified 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

No Reserve: Modified 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe $42,250

The floor of the market and a useful lesson in how the discounts compound: Tiptronic, two 'Not Actual Mileage Title Issued' entries, TechArt kit, GT30R turbos, refinished nose and rear fenders, cracked rotor vent holes suggesting undisclosed track use, and an eight-month flip. 31% below the overall median.

No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed Track Car

No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed Track Car $56,500

A genuine X50 with a Speed Gallery cage, JRZ coilovers and GT2 brakes sold for roughly what krnnerdboy reckoned the engine and gearbox alone are worth. The market paid nothing for the build and something less than nothing for unpinned coolant pipes plus a Range 2 overrev logged two operating hours before the DME pull.

2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe

2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe $61,500

A Turbo S coupe with PCCB, ~600hp Markski build and a year of documented sorting brought $61,500 because it is a Tiptronic. TheDaVinci's comment — 'i feel like a 6 speed would've gone for at least double' — is close to what the transmission split in the data implies.

2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed

2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed $76,300

Best value of the recent set on paper: 2003 X50, manual, 99k miles, all metal panels original per paint meter — sold $76,300 because of a 2004-05 front-bumper Carfax entry and a pre-2016 records gap. Ravdey: 'Bargain.' The buyer inherits an unaddressed coolant-pipe job.

If you want the driving car, buy a 60,000–90,000-mile manual coupe with a documented engine-out service and pinned pipes at $75,000–$90,000. Cars like 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (77k, $81,500) and 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed (81k, $91,996) show the market barely penalises honest miles on an unmolested Mezger, while it punishes tunes and repaints hard — so let someone else pay $30,000 for the last 40,000 unused miles. If you want the asset, only the top spec has behaved like one: manual coupe, sub-25,000 miles, factory X50 or Turbo S, original paint verified by meter, and a paper trail thick enough that a listing typo cannot cost you $20,000. Budget $110,000–$145,000 there and accept that you are buying at a 26.5% one-year run-up. Tiptronics, non-Turbo-S cabriolets and anything with a body-repair entry are cheap for identifiable reasons; buy them to drive at $50,000–$75,000, not to hold. Whatever the price, the coolant pipes are the single question that should move your bid most: unresolved, they are worth several thousand dollars off, and every fourth listing in this set dodged the question.

The transmission and colour splits come from the 40 deep-analysed cars only, not all 911 sales: Tiptronic n=3 and Black n=5, Basalt Black n=3. The Tiptronic median of $51,500 is directionally right — it matches the two Tiptronic sales in the recent set and commenter sentiment — but the true gap is unmeasured, and both Basalt cars were also automatics, so 'Basalt is cheap' probably reflects transmission, not paint. The mileage curve (n=35) has an R-squared you could drive a truck through: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed at 81,000 miles beat several 30k-mile cars. The 2026 median of $83,000 rests on 53 sales, and the recent listing mix is unusually skewed toward X50, Turbo S and sub-40k-mile cars, so some of the +26.5% year-on-year move is composition rather than pure appreciation. Nearly every comment thread features the same handful of voices — bmdaia, Carguybat, c041v, UltimateZo — whose views on Mezger indestructibility, DME irrelevance and 996TT undervaluation are therefore over-represented and unverified by any independent specialist; treat 'the Mezger is bulletproof' as informed opinion, and note that the same threads contain a rebuilt engine (No Reserve: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed) and an audible knock (2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed) that contradict the absolutism. Production-figure claims (7,000 manual coupes worldwide, ~3,500 US, 507 US manual Turbo S Cabs) come from commenters, not Porsche. Finally, several listings in this set were dealer consignments from the same high-volume vendor, whose presentation quality and pricing may not generalise to private sales.

Bidding patterns

These are patterns, not findings. A public auction record cannot show intent, and everything below has ordinary explanations — specialists and dealers bid on many cars of one model, enthusiasts run up cars they end up losing, and new accounts are usually just new. Read them as places to look closely, not as accusations.

Screened 39 bid ladders · 11 with something to note · 1 repeat-bidder pattern · thresholds set against this model's own auctions (typical closing window is 56% low-history bidders) · usernames masked for public viewing

10k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed
$126,000
Jul 27, 2026 · 10,000 mi · manual · black
An exceptionally preserved, numbers-matching 10k-mile 996 Turbo with critical engine-out service completed—genuine museum piece, though 2001 model year carries second-gear transmission risk and the prior auction's documentation error artificially suppressed prior valuation.
Potential second-gear pop-out transmission issue · Previous BaT auction listing erroneously stated 'engine replacement' when records showed engine-out service only, causing confusion and likely depressed final bid · Aggressive seller messaging and capitalization in final hours of auction may indicate pressure to move inventory

Jul 26, 2026 · 37,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
Well-maintained 37k-mile 996 Turbo with desirable low hours and clean history severely hampered by seller's self-service maintenance without paper trail and complete absence of driving video, leaving high-value bidders unable to verify condition or gain confidence despite appearing solid on paper.
Cooling lines condition undisclosed · Cooling lines status not clearly addressed despite this being a known 996 Turbo weakness · Self-service maintenance with minimal documentation — seller states 'I service my own vehicles' but provides no detailed records of work performed or parts used

Jul 25, 2026 · 30,000 mi · manual · seal grey metallic
A genuinely well-preserved low-mileage X50 example with honest provenance, though the dealer-installed Aerokit and unserviced coolant pipes undermine claims of true factory originality and comprehensive preventative care, yet the $127k hammer reflects strong collector demand for manual-transmission 996 Turbos entering the secondary market.
Lack of DME report availability during most of auction · Title mileage discrepancy required post-sale correction (affidavit), raising minor provenance concerns · Aerokit not on original factory option sticker—dealer-installed post-delivery, not truly factory-original despite OEM parts

Paint protection film obscures ability to definitively assess original paint condition; elevated meter readings require deduction math · Seller took time to clarify straightforward paint meter location question, suggesting possible evasion or disorganization

A professionally-caged, Speed Gallery–built 63k-mile X50 that dodged the coolant pipe bullet so far and hit the market after only 350 miles of current ownership—excellent engine/trans value, but unpinned cooling lines and a recent DME overrev event warrant a pre-purchase inspection before committing to six figures or further track use.
Coolant pipes not pinned or welded · DME Range 2 overrev event 2 hours before listing · Coolant pipes not pinned/welded despite this being a known 996 Turbo failure point and a critical track-car upgrade—seller claims no cooling issues but has only driven 350 miles · DME shows mechanical overrev event (Range 2 >7,900 RPM) occurring just 2 hours before the listing, raising questions about engine health or tune calibration

Jul 23, 2026 · 93,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
A meticulously sorted 93k-mile 2003 996 Turbo X50 with $19k in documented prior-owner service, factory pinned coolant lines, conservative 530-WHP tune, and a tragic ownership backstory that explains the rapid flip—one of the cleanest examples available but not without the small-print complexity of permanent ECU tuning and necessary oil viscosity discipline.
ECU tuned but stock tune may not be accessible without complications · Wastegate actuators installed complicating stock tune return · no DME (engine control module) data logging available to assess engine stress or over-rev events, which seller acknowledged but downplayed · heavy modification with ECU tune and aggressive wastegate setup means this is not a factory Mezger; returning to stock would require actuator replacement and ECU reflash

A genuinely desirable low-mileage 996 Turbo with tasteful mods and recent service sold well below market due to a 2010 rear-end accident, limited repair documentation, and paint meter inconsistencies that raised structural concern despite seller assurances.
2010 accident with rear-quarter panel and tailpipe damage · Paint meter reading variance and accuracy concerns · 2010 accident with rear-quarter panel replacement raises concerns about hidden structural or alignment issues, despite seller claims · 5 hours of frame labor listed on estimate—seller's explanation that frame was 'only investigated' appears evasive; frame labor typically indicates actual work

A meticulously maintained, one-year-only 996 Turbo S Cab with original paint, fresh major service, and confirmed clean DME, but past reliability notes in service history and reserve being missed at $70k suggest either market skepticism about hidden wear, durability risk, or that the black-on-black color and 70k miles price ceiling below buyer expectations for this rare manual-transmission swan song.
Reserve not met at $70,000 final bid, despite seller's comprehensive documentation and recent $19k reconditioning · Steering wheel provenance unclear—possible replacement without documentation during reconditioning work

A legitimate ultra-low-mileage 996 Turbo with full service records and the homologation Group C Mezger engine that defines modern 911 collecting, marred by contradictory descriptions of the Gemballa wing, documented cosmetic defects inconsistent with 'museum quality' claims, and BaT's 'engine replacement' error that spooked bidders and caused reserve-not-met at $105k—a car that would likely exceed $175k if relisted with honest photos and OEM deck lid restored.
Misleading engine description in BAT Essentials · Gemballa rear wing hydraulic function discrepancy · 'Engine Replacement Records' in BAT Essentials vs. actual engine-out service only—significant misleading language that appears to have directly suppressed bidding · Contradictory statements on Gemballa rear wing: first claimed fixed/non-functional, then claimed functional with hydraulics; photos show hydraulics missing

Coolant pipes not pinned or welded · Rapid price appreciation (purchased August 2024 for ~$58k, resold June 2026 for $91,996 after only 5,000 additional miles) may indicate speculative flip rather than genuine ownership experience, though seller claims weekend-only driving and provided comprehensive maintenance documentation · No paint meter readings provided despite being a 24-year-old car; seller was out of town and did not obtain readings before auction close

46k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed
$71,500
May 1, 2026 · 46,000 mi · manual · seal grey metallic
A well-preserved, low-mileage first-year 996 Turbo with verifiable minor accident history and missing critical coolant-line pinning maintenance, sold at realistic market value to an informed buyer despite excessive IMS-bearing noise from commenters who failed to distinguish Mezger engines from their problematic non-turbo counterparts.
Coolant lines not pinned · Service records unavailable · Service records lost due to previous owner's death; only pre-purchase inspection by dealer's shop documented before acquisition · Coolant lines unpinned—potential failure point if driven hard or tracked
No Reserve: 38k-Mile 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet 6-Speed
$66,500
May 1, 2026 · 38,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
A low-mileage, well-kept 996 Turbo cab with fresh cosmetics and recent fuel-system work that still harbors the classic risk of unaddressed coolant-pipe decay, sold at what commenters agreed was a solid discount in a no-reserve sprint.
Fuel lines not properly clipped · Coolant pipes not addressed in engine-out service · Fuel lines initially installed incorrectly from factory or previous service · Coolant pipes (known weak point on 996s) not addressed in 2021 engine-out service despite being addressed at that time
No Reserve: Modified 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe
$42,250
Apr 30, 2026 · 79,000 mi · tiptronic · basalt black metallic
A heavily modified, turbo-charged 996 with persistently muddled mileage history, recent cosmetic work masking prior damage, unconfirmed track exposure, and two owners in eight months—a speculative play best suited to a well-equipped builder or accepted as a low-entry-price gamble.
Mileage discrepancy and TMU status · Brake rotor cracking at vent holes · Rapid ownership turnover: purchased at BaT August 2025, resold April 2026 (8 months); current consignor (dealer) acquired it post-auction and immediately consigned for resale · 'Not Actual Mileage Title Issued' notation appears twice (2011 and October 2025), indicating persistent odometer credibility problems; actual mileage unknown
Modified, 31k-Mile 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed
$83,000
Apr 25, 2026 · 31,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
A meticulously executed, low-mileage modified 996 Turbo with comprehensive TechArt bodywork and 640 hp tune, held by a knowledgeable previous owner, but hamstrung by undisclosed 18-year service gap, ambiguous Carfax accident history, California smog illegality, and incomplete documentation that will require thorough buyer inspection before delivery.
Carfax accident entry with no details · Smog test history and CARB compliance · Montana LLC title used to circumvent California registration despite seller being California-based · Carfax 18-year gap in service records (2003-2021)
Original-Owner, 31k-Mile 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed
$89,000
Apr 24, 2026 · 31,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
A low-mileage, single-owner, original-spec Arctic Silver Mezger with light service history sold well at $89k; the unresolved DME query and unchanged 2010-date tires are minor shadows against a fundamentally sound, bulletproof engine and increasingly collectible 996TT market.
Tail hydraulics leak · Coolant pipes not pinned or welded · No window sticker provided · DME report could not be extracted despite three separate attempts by different shops with different scanner tools
2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe
$51,500
Apr 24, 2026 · 74,000 mi · tiptronic · basalt black metallic
A well-preserved 2003 996 Turbo Tiptronic with strong service history and desirable options, but incomplete disclosure on 2022 damage, non-functional rear spoiler, and cracked carbon-fiber trim—sold under reserve for $51.5k to an informed buyer willing to accept known platform weaknesses as acceptable risk on a track-capable, low-mileage Mezger platform.
Incomplete history on 2022 'minor damage' Carfax entry · Incomplete documentation of August 2022 'minor damage' Carfax entry—location and extent unknown · Seller claims coolant lines are unmodified and recently inspected but provides no supporting documentation from Performance Independent
Augie Pabst Jr.'s 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed
$175,000
Apr 23, 2026 · 14,000 mi · manual · arctic silver metallic
A near-showroom 14k-mile X50 manual coupe with impeccable single-owner provenance (deceased racing driver Augie Pabst Jr.), documented garage storage, and untouched Group C Mezger engine that sold well below comparable ultra-low-mileage comps, suggesting either conservative reserve discipline or emerging market repricing as 996 Turbo values stabilize post-hype.
Carfax correction required: original report showed 2 previous owners, seller successfully challenged and corrected to single original owner (Augie Pabst Jr.) · Rear wing mechanism motors never replaced despite potential age-related concerns
Modified 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet 6-Speed
Reserve not met
Apr 21, 2026 · 51,000 mi · manual · black
A comprehensively documented early RUF Turbo S cab would command premium money, but missing conversion paperwork and an inadequate DME report left enough doubt to sink the reserve despite strong interest and bidding that climbed to $71.5k.
January 2015 damage report on Carfax · DME/engine data report inadequate · Original RUF conversion paperwork not produced despite repeated requests · DME report provided was incomplete and lacked full engine history counters that buyers typically require for modified vehicles
